First week of the new year. Through the tail end of the holidays I was in the alpine and on my skis. It sure is a great way to spend exercise time in the winter. I really take energy from the surroundings: being in the woods by myself with just nature’s sounds is pretty awesome.

This was the first week back at the office. A new year and a fresh start to keep my office life in order. Keeping strong hold over my calendar so that I have time to actually think about the problems I am asked to solve as well as make space for training is one of my key objectives this year. So far so good.

I had a real solid block of skate skiing leading into the week. By Friday I was run down. In fact, Thursday’s ride ended up being at more intensity than it probably should have been. My morning markers were way off Friday morning so I took a day off.

In my past (a long time ago now) I would have just bit my tounge and done Friday’s planned training. Now that I am older I am trying to be less driven by what the training plan calls for and adapt to how I am actually feeling. My overall fitness isn’t about a single week or missed day, it is the sum of 1000s of days of work.

I am happy to have hit most of my run and swim sessions. I always find space for the bike so I am trying to focus getting those sessions in as well. At the pool I was happily surprised that it wasn’t jam packed. This time of year can be tricky when you need to use shared facilities. I hope that continues.

Heading back to the alpine at the tail end of the coming week. Already counting down the days!
