Coming out of last week, which felt some what like a recovery week, I thought things would shake out nicely. I was wrong. Work hotted up some and I had a slow start to my training week. I wasn’t able to get my running or swimming in early week. So that recovery feeling kept building.

The tail end of the week was really strong. I felt great in the pool on Friday. Which was a happy surprise, I hadn’t been in the water in over a week. My weekend rides were strong. I am seeing far more power output with my heart rate in my aerobic zone than in the late fall. Good to see progress.

The interesting thing for me right now is how the training I am doing is a throw back to my earliest days in triathlon. I took some heat back in the day for my aerobic focused (and boring) focused program. In recent years the time I spent riding was generally far harder than it needed to be. The world just love HIIT work. There certainly is value in high power intervals all the time. Road racing is far more stochastic, periods of very high power and ones of very low. Ultra distance triathlon is far more steady. And given the lengthly run following the bike, the faster you can ride with a low heart rate cap the better that run is going to be.
